This research intends to assess the impact of preferred mesoscale eddy pathways on physical (temperature, salinity), biogeochemical (oxygen, carbon, nutrients) and other tracers in the Eastern Pacific off California and Chile. While previous work has suggested the existence of such pathways and associated them with the recently discovered banded pattern in the world ocean mesoscale circulation, their impact on physical/chemical properties has received little attention. The present effort will address the significance of eddy pathways for the transport and mixing of biologically and climatically relevant properties, with a broad range of applications of interest to the US Navy and to society at large.
